We said goodbye to our two lovely pigs today, and it's always a difficult moment. Their grunts, squeals and snores have been the summer soundtrack to the holding, and it's been very quiet today without them. However, we console ourselves with the fact that they had a brilliant outdoor life with a rich and varied organic diet, and they lived longer, more natural lives than their commercial counterparts. Most commercial pigs are slaughtered at 5.5 to 6 months of age and weigh approximately 91 to 135 kg. Our pigs were 9 months old at slaughter, and these two weighed 103 and 106 kgs, respectively. This slow-growing can definitely be tasted in our meat, which is dark, tender and flavoursome.
In addition, at the end of their lives, they had 25 minutes in transport and 30 minutes in the pen before slaughter. The smoothness of this process keeps the pigs calm and relaxed right up to the end.
Thank you lovely piggies for all you have shared with us during your time at The Lint Mill. We will honour your lives with us by eating every last morsel with respect and gratitude.
