After completing @plantlife.loveplants self-led e-learning course and armed with a little more knowledge to ID these fungi, here's the first one I encountered on my walk across one of our fields today.
I think it's a Scarlet Waxcap - Hygrocybe coccinea (it could be Hygrocybe splendidissima) and I am always happy to be corrected by someone more expert than me.

The ACV (apple cider vinegar) is at the ‘hard cider’ stage and is fermenting nicely. It’s filling the kitchen with a pretty alcoholic fug when it gets its stirring.

After a decade, Peter May has returned to the Hebrides in his latest novel ‘The Black Loch’. The plot features the parlous state of the Scottish Salmon industry and as I passed the Leaping Salmon Millennium sculpture in Peebles (itself in a parlous state), I was reminded of this journal entry I wrote in 2019, explaining why you won’t find this once Scottish delicacy on the menu at The Lint Mill.
