Herbal Calming

At The Lint Mill we like to provide our guests with a choice of natural, organic, hand-made toiletries from Caurnie Soaps, an award winning Scottish soaperie. I have been using Caurnie products for nearly 20 years and I love them! So, we ask our guests to select what they fancy from our ‘soap menu’ when they arrive, and we pop them in the bathroom for their stay.

One of the best things about doing this, is our regular visit to Caurnie Soaperie. We spend a couple of hours with Jim chatting about the soaps, sniffing the delicious fragrance of this one or that one, and imagining which ones our guests might enjoy. Listening to Jim’s obvious passion for soapmaking is a pleasure. Caurnie Soaperie has been in his family since 1922 and, there in the wonderful ‘Heath Robinson’-esque factory, Jim and his team make everything by hand using pure vegan ingredients. They source all their ingredients locally, and use ethical methods of farming and processing on equipment that has been in continuous use since the 1920s.

Jim is a bit of a Heath Robinson himself and he does brilliant cartoon style line drawings of day-to-day life at Caurnie Soaperie. If you ask him nicely, he’ll show them to you when you visit. I think Jim is far too modest about his products and his drawings, there’s a lovely illustrated book waiting to be written in his spare time!!

You can visit Caurnie Soap at The Organic Herb Garden, Canal Street, Kirkintilloch on Tuesdays from 10am to 2pm. You will be made most welcome, your only problem will be trying to choose which of his delicious soaps to buy. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to find a little bit of herbal calm at Caurnie.
